IMPORTANT

ANNOUNCMENT ABOUT THE JANUARY MATCHES!

Once again we faced the difficult decision of whether to have the two-day match given the persistence in the increase in cases of COVID.

Given the circumstances, in January LASC will NOT be holding the two-day match on 01/09 and 01/10.

We know there are members and guests who want to shoot, but with the continuing increase in Covid cases in L.A. County, LASC decided to once again hold off on the monthly Big Bore match.

Because there will not be a match on the 9th and 10th, these days will be open shooting days.  Members who want to practice at LASC and who are on the list in the ASR office and cleared for using the range, should sign in and pay at ASR.  Shooters can bring their own targets or use the existing swingers.

As of the date of this newsletter, the Cowboy match on Sunday, 01/17 and the .22 match on 01/22 WILL be held.  These are smaller half-day matches.  If anything changes to prohibit these events, we will inform our shooters.

Once again, LASC wants its member’s to know that we will get through this difficult time, and our club will be able to go back to the monthly matches and those wonderful Saturday night dinners.

IHMSA NOTE FOR 2021

IHMSA contacted JR to let him know that IHMSA sanction fees will be increasing from $1 to $2.  The club pays IHMSA the $1 fee for each card turned in during a match.  Because of the increase in the fee LASC pays, the cost of cards to IHMSA shooters will increase $1 for each card.  Please check with JR if you have any questions.

·      Lost and Found – IMPORTANT:  We are accumulating some interesting items…  There is a set of custom-molded ear plugs that were left on the firing line.  We also have a man’s ring (we think it’s a man’s by the size) that was found in the parking lot.  It may have been there sometime.  If you believe you lost something at one of the matches, please check with Jerry Napier.  (You will need to describe the ring to claim it.)

·      Don’t forget to sign a Release Form each time you shoot at LASC.  They are on the firing line or at the ASR office for times when members check in there.

LASC IS BACK!

The February Match is On!

(No need to be a grumpy cat any longer.)

And Happy Valentine’s Day to our shooters.

The Big Bore two-day match will be happening in February.  Because it has been three months since LASC had a match, time to get your guns ready and come out and play!  The weather is due to be just right.

As of this newsletter, LASC is working on the lunch and food situation, and we do not know if LASC will have food for sale.  So, please dust off your cooler and plan on bringing your own food and snacks.  We will be breaking for a lunch period to allow the target setters to rest.  This will also give shooters a chance to sit; talk and reconnect while socially distancing and enjoying their lunch.

Jim Henry will be at the match.  So, if you if your firearms need repair or you have maintenance questions, now is your chance.

(You will need to describe the ring to claim it.) (February note:  I’m leaving these items in just to make sure that the parties who lost them get a chance to see the “found” listing.)

·      Don’t forget to sign a Release Form each time you shoot at LASC.  They are on the firing line or at the ASR office for times when members check in there.

Next Big Bore Match after February will be March 13th and 14th!

March 2021

March News Letter

February Wrap Up!

The Big Bore two-day match attendance was a little slow in February.  Not a lot of shooters, but that was understandable between Covid and the windy weather.  Saturday was passible, but Sunday, the winds really kicked up and shooters opted to leave early rather than fight the dust and wind.

But, not to worry, LASC members and guests.  Spring is here, the range is in great shape, and this coming weekend looks to be perfect weather.  Time to return to shooting, enjoy the outdoors and reconnect with fellow shooters.

LASC intends to have lunches for sale (Thank you Faye and Pam), but you might want to plan on carrying extra snacks in your cooler in case of last minute changes.  We will be breaking for a lunch period to allow the target setters to rest.  This will also give shooters a chance to sit and talk or peruse the items for sale!  SALE, you say??? See the announcement below.

**IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!**

On Saturday, March 13th, be sure to get to the range EARLY.

LASC member and fellow shooter Rick Mischler passed away.  For those who shot with him and knew him, you will remember he was a dedicated silhouette shooter.  His widow Nancy and son Rich will be bringing Rick’s silhouette gear – all kinds of items – to LASC to sell.  If you need equipment, now is the time to come up and check out the fabulous finds.  There will be an array of silhouette necessities to check out.  After you have made your purchases, there will be time to shoot the match and chat with other shooters.  It doesn’t get any better than that.

**REMINDER**

THERE IS NO MARCH COWBOY RIFLE MATCH ON SUNDAY, MARCH 21st.

That Sunday Morning the Range will be open for LASC members to shoot.  Mark Woss will be away for his usual March Madness trek, but will be back in action for the April Cowboy Rifle match.

·      Jim Henry will be at the match.  If you if your firearms need repair or you have maintenance questions, now is your chance.

(You will need to describe the ring to claim it.) (March note:  I’m leaving these items in just to make sure that the parties who lost them get a chance to see the “found” listing.)  ACT NOW if they are yours or you think you might know who they belong to.

·      Don’t forget to sign a Release Form each time you shoot at LASC.  They are on the firing line or at the ASR office for times when members check in there.

March and April Wrap Up

March and April - This newsletter is going to be packed with scores because we have the Big Bore Match reports for three months – thanks to Mr. Moose – and we did have a good turnout on both the Saturdays in March and April.  The weather is wonderful this time of the year at the range.  Don’t stay home!  Time to come shooting at LASC.

Regarding Saturday Night Dinner:  At this time there are no plans for a meal at LASC.  Therefore, if you are staying overnight, you will need to provide for your Saturday night fixin’s.

A WORD ABOUT MASK PROTOCOL ON THE FIRING LINE

We have shooters who do not think it is necessary to wear face coverings when in the firing line area (that is, off the actual line).  That is incorrect.  We have members and attendees who, due to other health conditions, are unable to be vaccinated.  We also have those who have not been vaccinated.  We need to remain courteous to others at this time.

HERE’S THE SCOOP:  When a shooter is on the line and in a bay and shooting down range, he or she does not need to have their mask on.  We realize the required glasses tend to fog up.  BUT, once the shooter steps out of the bay and is behind the firing line, they must have their mask on.  Any shooter who does not want to wear a mask should step off the firing line area entirely, and go into the parking lot.

We also ask that when you go to the office to purchase a card or use the rest rooms, you wear your mask as a courtesy to others.  Mask wearing is not dependent on whether or not you have been vaccinated.  We are trying to take precautions for everyone at this time.  Hopefully, this will all end in the near future.  But in the meantime, Please Mask-up when you are at any LASC matches.

RATTLE SNAKE REMINDER:

Several shooters have spotted the Southern Pacific rattle snake on the firing line (see below).  Yes, it is that time of year when all LASC members and guests need to watch their step.  The rattlers have been spotted sunning themselves in the grass behind the firing line, around the club-house area and just in front of the firing line bays on the cement.  The young ones are starting to make appearances too, and they are rather small when coiled.  Watch your step when you are on the line.

Jacquie Rifkind supplied us with these from LASC last weekend:

Goodbye to LASC’s good friend & expert silhouette shooter

                                                          Rich Mishler

The following is from the Orange County Register.  Thanks to Moose, who found it on the internet.

On Wednesday, January 13, 2021, attended by his wife, Nancy, and son, Rich, Richard Carl Mishler died peacefully at home after a long battle with multiple myeloma and heart disease. He is preceded in death by his father Bruce Frank Mishler, and mother Eleanore Josephine (nee Anderson) Mishler.

Richard was a man of many skills and could do anything to which he set his mind. He spent many happy weekends restoring his 38 ft. Drake cabin cruiser. He was an avid Harley rider and went on many rides including several trips to Sturgis. After retiring, he toured all lower 48 states on his Harley Road Glide.

Richard rose to prominence as a competitive handgun and long gun marksmanship, winning 5 NRA gold rings and numerous trophies in NRA and international competitions. He held world records with perfect scores in handgun and rifle Silhouette competitions. Richard's determination and sportsmanship earned him the nickname "Bulldog" among his shooting buddies. During one event in Ohio, Richard had his first heart attack but refused to go to the hospital until after he finished shooting, ending with no less than a perfect score.

Richard's dream job was being a mechanic at the Huntington Beach Fire Department, from which he retired. His family is grateful to the Huntington Beach Fire Department, Station 43, for saving his life on more than one occasion. After Richard's heart attack in Ohio, he later suffered another at home and was resuscitated by his co-workers who called him their Miracle Man for surviving three resuscitations. God bless them.

Richard had a life well-lived. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 52 years, Nancy, son Richard, sisters Anne Collette (John), Linda Moss (Robert), Victoria Mc Guckin (Michael) and brother Gregory (Thomas), as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends. A memorial will be held at a later date.

Jim Henry

Just a word about our resident gun smith who takes care of all the shooters at the club.  Jim has had back problems and is now on the road to recovery.

From what Faye Henry said, we hope to see Jim’s and Fay’s smiling faces at the club in December.

We really do miss them both so much and LASC members and shooters wish Jim a speedy return to health.

A Reminder About Saturday Night Dinners during the monthly matches:  At this time there are no plans for a meal at LASC.  Therefore, if you are staying overnight, you will need to provide for your Saturday fixin’s.

The Extravaganza Match Report

will be included the November newsletter.

THE EXTRAVAGANZA THANK YOUS!

First, “THANK YOU” to all the shooters who drove to LASC from faraway places and not so faraway places.  It’s always wonderful to see our annual guests in addition to our regular shooters.  We really do hope you can make it to LASC more often.  Our guests, no matter how far they drive from, are the ones who make the event worthwhile.

Next, “THANK YOU” to all the members and associates who worked to get our event together.

Jerry Ray (“JR”) who ran the firing line so we could participate and safely shoot.  Jerry Napier and Joe Cadenas who are continuously upgrading LASC and making it a wonderful place to shoot.

Ruby Cadenas for running the stat house, so when you checked in you would see her smiling face as you paid your fees and received your cards each day.

LASC Target Setters who were ready at each cease-fire and made sure the shooters had their targets re-set after each string.  A big LASC THANK YOU while they worked in such extreme heat!  We could not have had the match without them.

Malina and the kitchen crew!   Malina and the cooks and kitchen miracle workers who made lunches and dinners for all the shooters and the target setters.  You were fabulous!  The dinners were wonderful and your dedication to keeping our guests satisfied is much appreciated.

Dennis Ostler who year in and year out contributes the plaques so shooters have that and memories to take home.

We could not have done The Extravaganza without the contributions of all these people.

THE EXTRAVAGANZA REPORT will be in the November Newsletter.

Jim Henry

Just a word about our resident gun smith who takes care of all the shooters at the club.  I don’t think we will see them until December, but Jim is recovering very nicely and he and Faye even stopped by for a few hours on Saturday during the Extravaganza!

We do miss them both so much.

ANNOUNCMENTS – EVENTS ___________________________________________________________

This month’s newsletter is going to be missing the two-day match reports.  We hope to catch up on those in the next newsletter.

The November Match had a decent turnout and we even had Dave and Patsy Silva drive up from Yuma to grace LASC with their presence.  It was so great to see them at the match, and we hope they come by again before they head up to South Dakota.  Jim and Faye were also there, and both looked well rested.  Jim was in good form as he did repair work on some guns, and took others home to work on for some LASC shooters.  Be sure to scroll down to the pictures at the end of this newsletter.

*LASC ANNOUNCEMENTS*

**LASC needs its Members and Shooters to help set-up for the December Match**

The two-day matches require a good amount of club and range set-up.  We need help on Friday, December 10th.  Please, if you can come up to LASC in the morning to help set up the clubhouse, firing line and the range, as well as any other things that need to get done for the match, please let Jerry Napier know at this email address.  We need to have more members involved with this monthly set-up.

**Jim & Faye Henry Will NOT Be At the December Match**

Jim and Faye are not going to make the match due to them both coming down with head colds.  Hopefully, we will once again see their smiling faces in January.  We wish them both a speedy recovery and a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

  **There Will NOT be a

December .22 Match**

The .22 match falls on Christmas this year, and because of that and the fact ASR is closed, there will be NO .22 match for the month of December.

There will be a Saturday Night Dinner this month so please make plans to stay and enjoy.
