January News Letter
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
JANUARY 2022
**DUE TO CIRCUMSTANCES, THE JANUARY TWO-DAY MATCH IS CANCELLED**
All of you know Joe Cadenas who provides the targets setters (his family) for the match as well as help run the match, does set-up and his wife Ruby runs the Stat House. His mother passed away in Texas late on January 3rd. He and his family were in Texas visiting his mother for the holidays. He will now need to remain there to settle matters. Our sympathy and condolences go out to the entire Cadenas family.
Because the three days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) are LASC reserved, these will now be practice days with swingers only available. Club members may come up and practice this weekend. At this time, the Lever Action Match on Sunday, January 16th is still set to occur.

LASC ANNOUNCMENTS – EVENTS ___________________________________________________________
The December Match was a little small, and yes it was getting cold after about 4pm, but LASC had a terrific Saturday Night dinner with JR making some scrumptious beef and prime rib on the Trager barbeque. LASC is trying to get back up to speed with meals on Saturday night, but for the time being we will announce when we are going to offer dinner for those who stay.

With sadness we report the passing of two legacy LASC members.
George Adams
Shooters who’ve been at LASC for many years will recognize and remember George as being there from the start of the club at ASR. He was instrumental in helping build the clubhouse and firing line. In those days, George was an active shooter, member and LASC supporter. While he had not been at LASC in over a decade, his legacy lives on at the club.
George passed away at his home in Texas on February 2. I’m told he was battling cancer and had contracted Covid.
George and Elizabeth Adams

Dick Bierman
Dick was at the club for many years starting back in the 1990’s. He shot with Jerry Ray (“JR”) and was an active silhouette shooter through the years. His health declined after being diagnosed with cancer, and he passed away earlier this year.

WARNING: IT’S RATTLESNAKE SEASON!
THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC RATTLESNAKE at LASC
(This is the annual SNAKE ALERT.) It is coming up on the time of the year to be on the lookout for the young Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes. They tend to coil and make a small “bundle” that is easy to miss and even easier to be stepped on, thus causing them to strike out of fear and self-protection. Please be careful where are you are stepping. If you spot one (and they are hard to notice against the landscape) just steer clear until the snake moves out of the way on its own or can be safely moved. Fortunately, the Southern Pacific Rattlesnake is a fairly non-aggressive sub-species, and will usually go on its way when given the opportunity. (Remember: These snakes are what keeps the rodent population down and our berms from disintegrating.)
To give you an idea of how small a juvenile ratter is, here’s one coiled and resting next to a quarter.
That’s why we emphasize to watch where you step!
- Because of Jerry Napier’s diligence, we now have working cell service at the range and 4G in the classroom.
- A Reminder About Saturday Night Dinners-
For APRIL there are no plans for a meal at LASC. Therefore, if you are staying overnight, you will need to provide for your Saturday fixin’s.

MEMORIAL SERVICE
Saturday, June 11 at 4:00pm
LASC LOST ONE OF ITS MOST BELOVED AND SUPPORTIVE CLUB MEMBERS ON MAY 2nd, FAYE HENRY.
Faye and her husband, LASC’S resident gun smith Jim Henry, have been LASC stalwarts for decades. All LASC members and guests remember her tireless effort as she saw to it the target setters were fed at the two-day match and there was a Saturday night feast for those who stayed overnight. To say she will be missed is an understatement.
At the two-day match in June, on Saturday we will have a memorial service and dinner to commemorate Faye. Please stay after the match for the service and dinner as we share our memories and sadness at Faye’s passing. We would love it if club members and guests shared their best Faye moments.
If you care to help or bring something to the memorial, please contact Meg and Mike Dewey at megec@msn.com.
And, if you plan on coming, can you reply to this email and let us know how many. We want to get an idea of the amount of food we will need to prepare.

2022 California State Lever-Action Rifle Silhouette Match Recap
LASC wants to say “Thank You” to all those who attended the State Championship. We had shooters from all parts of California, Arizona, Nevada and Texas. The competition turned out to be fun, nerve wracking, exhilarating, frustrating and exciting. You never can tell what will happen at these matches. LASC had new shooters come to the match and some shooters we had not seen for a while. The weather started out being cold and damp one day, then warm and friendly the next. Participants got to hang out
in the evening and share stories, thrills and just get acquainted. Making new friends and shooting comradery are all part of the fun of the annual match.
For those who would like to see all the pictures from the event and the winners, Dennis Oster, the match director, has set up this site to link to all the fun:
https://thebugfather.smugmug.com/2022-Calif-State-Lever-Gun/n-3FkvMR/
There are so many people to thank for this event: Jerry Napier, club president who with Joe Cadenas, got the range together and who keep the club facilities in tip top shape. Ruby Cadenas, who is the smiling face in our stat office and with Nora Ostler, checked in all the shooters for this match. The kitchen crew, Jeannette and Courtney, who kept us fed and happy. And stepping in to help in the kitchen and wherever she was needed was Vicki Shaver. Mark Woss who helped set up the range and stepped in wherever he was needed. JR who we missed but who did some cooking from afar (he snuck in and out with the homemade pasta sauces). Gordon Hull, our welder who set up additional targets. Val Shaver, who managed to not lose his voice after calling the line for three days. Our indispensable group of energetic target setters who kept re-setting targets so we shooters had a match. And the match director, Dennis Ostler, who not only participated but set up and executed the match logistics flawlessly. And I’m sure he did not get enough sleep through this event.
THANK YOU ALL, FOR MAKING THE EVENT POSSIBLE.
*LASC needs its Members and Shooters to help set-up for the June two-day Match*

THE EXTRAVAGANZA THANK YOUS!
First, “THANK YOU” to all the shooters who drove to LASC from faraway places (especially with the cost of gasoline through the roof and the triple digit heat!!) and not so faraway places. It’s always wonderful to see our annual guests in addition to our regular shooters. We really do hope you can make it to LASC more often. Our guests make the event worthwhile.
Next, “THANK YOU” to all the members and supporters who worked to get our event together.
Jerry Ray (“JR”) who ran the firing line so we could participate and safely shoot. Jerry Napier and Joe Cadenas who are continuously upgrading LASC and making it a wonderful place to shoot.
Ruby Cadenas for running the stat house, so when you checked in you would see her smiling face as you paid your fees and received your cards each day.
LASC Target Setters who were ready at each cease-fire and made sure the shooters had their targets re-set after each string. A big LASC THANK YOU while they worked in such extreme heat! We could not have had the match without them.
Jeannette, Courtney, and Vicky Shaver who stepped in to help made lunches and dinners for all the shooters and the target setters. You were fabulous! The dinners were wonderful and your dedication to keeping our guests satisfied is much appreciated.
