January 2017 Match Report
LASC Big Bore Match Report
January 14 and 15, 2017
By Dennis “Moose” Edwards
Just a reminder: This is the New Year and you need to update your LASC club membership. Jerry Napier is collecting our dues. These dues are very helpful in keeping our club solvent, and gives members all the benefits that LASC has to offer. The IHMSA membership is also due. The IHMSA membership is only $35 a year. You can pay online; just go to their website and use pay-pal.
I heard that Mike Dewey had some rain damage to his new home. We wish you all the best and hope to see you soon. Faye was not at this match because of an illness. We also hope you feel better. LASC is not the same without you guys.
The range looked pretty good for all the rains we have had. There were not very many shooters on Saturday, but thanks to the rifle shooters on Sunday, it was fairly busy. We had a total of 56 entries: 28 pistol and 18 rifle, with 5 perfect 40s! Jim Harris and Ted Mathies had 40s in Unlimited Big Bore, JR shot a 40 in Small Bore UAS. Hulan Mathies and Val Shaver shot 40s in Practical Hunter long range. Great shooting!!!
Don't forget we shoot a small bore match on the second Saturday after the Big Bore match. You get 3 entries for only $20. We always have lots of fun, and there are target setters (thank you to Joe and family)!! And, in case you didn’t get breakfast, JR brings some gooey treats for us. I think he wants us all to have a sugar high before we shoot. I am not sure of his motives!!!!

February 2017 Match Report
LASC Big Bore Match Report
February 11 and 12, 2017
By Dennis “Moose” Edwards
The range was a little overcast Saturday and really windy on Sunday. Sadly, we canceled the match by Sunday mid-morning.
It was nice to see that a few of our traveling shooters made it. Dave and Patsy Silva from Yuma, Az, Val Shaver from Henderson, Nv, Eric King and Dan Hagerty from central Ca., and Steve Hannawacker from Apple Valley, Ca.. I'm so happy to see old friends.
There were a total of 25 guns shot (all on Saturday) with 6-40s. Dan Hagerty in BB Unl., Val Shaver in UAS ½ scale and Practical Hunter (long course), Moose in Practical Hunter (short course), Dave Silva in SB UAS, and Mike Dewey in SB UAS. Great shooting!!!! Only three rifle shooters showed up Saturday and none on Sunday due to the winds, I guess.
I did not stick around for the Saturday night meal, but I'm sure it was good. I think they had spaghetti. You shooters should stay for the Saturday night meal if you can. We always put out a great spread, with plenty to eat and drink. I would have stayed except I forgot to pack my meds.
Don't forget we shoot a small bore match on the second Saturday after the Big Bore match weekend. You get 3 entries for only $20. We always have lots of fun, and there are target setters (thank you to Joe and family)!! And, in case you didn’t get breakfast, JR brings some gooey treats for us. March 2017 Match Report
LASC Big Bore Match Report
March 11 and 12, 2017
By Dennis “Moose” Edwards
It was a beautiful weekend for shooting. It was sunny in the low to mid 80s, with hardly any wind. Perfect shooting conditions for the sport we love. If you were not here, than you missed a great weekend of shooting, eating, and socializing. Saturday evening had a beautiful full moon. A great back ground for our Saturday night meal. There was plenty of food. I want to thank Dennis Robinson, Faye Henry, Ramone and Joe, for all the food.
Pam was busy cooking lunch and the Young Marines did a fine job setting targets. Remember, there is a Target Setters Appreciation Day Match coming up (Saturday, April, 20th). We can use some help. Please check with J R or Jerry Napier for details. Jim Henry was on hand for gun repairs, and Bill was busy repairing the broken targets, with Ramone and Joe watching over the target setters We thank and appreciate all the hard work our members do, and this includes all the work party participants.
There were plenty shooting position open so no waiting in line. Remember the Extravaganza will be here before you know it, so get your guns warmed up and ready to go. Please bring some friends. We could always use more shooters. Their first match is free and we will supply the gun and ammo.
We had a total 44 guns shot (18 BB, 11 SB, 6 practical Hunter and 9 rifle) with 7 40s. Hulan Mathies shot a 40 (BB UAS and short range practical hunter), Val Shaver (long range practical hunter and SB U), Jim Harris (BB U), J R (BB U) and Moose(short range practical hunter). Boris had a very nice 35 in SB cowboy rifle. There were no 3 or 4 gun aggregate shooters, with only 1 standing shooter.

April 2017 Match Report
LASC Big Bore Match Report
April 8 and 9, 2017
By Dennis “Moose” Edwards
I want to talk about safety this month. Everyone should be following all of LASC range rules, especially regarding firearm safety and firing line procedures. It is mandatory for all on the firing line (shooters and observers) to wear eye and ear protection. The range caller is the firing line officer, and must be obeyed. There were shots fired before the “Fire” command and after the “Cease fire” command. This should never happen. If you are not sure the “Fire” command has been given, always assume it has not. When the “Cease fire” is called, immediately stop. No more shooting. Period! If you need to discharge a round downrange after the “Cease fire” command, let the firing line officer know immediately so they can guide you. If there is a problem with the firearm, take the gun off the line to be worked on. Once the target setters are out, there is NO touching of firearms on the bench. Period! If you see any unsafe acts, it is your responsibility to say something. We cannot afford any mistakes. It could mean somebodies life. We cannot stress enough the importance of safety, and we all need some reminders. So be extra careful. Thanks and be safe.
(REMINDER: You know your firearm is unloaded buy others don’t. When you carry your gun to and from the line, it should always be unloaded with the action open and muzzle pointed in a safe direction with your finger off the trigger. If you have an OBI (open bolt indicator) please use it on the firing line and while transporting firearms to and from the line.)
It was another great week end of shooting. There was a total of 64 guns shot (42 pistol and 22 rifle). A total of nine 40's. ValShaver and Hulan Mathies had two apiece, While Jim Harris, Ted Matthies , Jerry Napier, and Moose each had one. Al Roberts had a 40+2 in half scale - way to go!! There were three 35's in rifle, Ted White, Boris Sorkin and Kenji Fujimura. Great shooting guys. Steve Hannawacker had a great 3 and 4 gun aggregates in big bore, and was 1 shy of 100 in Small bore in 3 gun aggregate. He did all this without a 40. Ted Matthies had a very nice 99 in 3 gun B.B. aggregate. There were a few cards turned in with very little info on them. I do not read minds, so if I don't have it listed right, Oh well!! (If you don’t write it on the card, I cannot report it!)

May 2017 Match Report
LASC Big Bore Match Reports
May 13 – 14, 2017
By Dennis “Moose” Edwards
Do you remember your first silhouette match? Of course you do!!! Mine happened to be 30 years ago this month. I shot a T/C contender in 30-30 win, and I shot a 27. Jake Rohrbaucker took me to Inland to try my luck. I have been hooked ever sense. I would shoot almost every week-end. I would travel from Ojai to Fresno to Inland to LASC. It did not matter. I would shoot IHMSA and NRA matches. I would go to the Nationals, the Internationals, Regionals and State Matches. I shot big bore, small bore, and even standing. Those were the days. Now I shoot at LASC and wish WCC was still shooting. Most all our ranges are closed and it makes me feel bad. I think about the old timers, and wish Jake was still alive so I could shoot with him one more time. Nowadays I find myself shooting light calibers in T/Cs with scopes on them. I still try my luck at open sights with not so much luck. Oh well the past is past. The time is now, and I will keep shooting as long as the silhouette gods will let me.
Before I get into this month’s match report, I want to thank all you for making my sport soooo enjoyable. If not for you, I would be punching holes in targets up on the main range. How boring!!! Let’s keep IHMSA going and make some more memories.
It was a great week-end for shooting. Weather was clear and mild, very little wind. It was nice to see some of out of town shooters. Labor Day is right around the corner. That means Extravaganza time. For the first time LASC will shoot 4 days. The range will be open for practice on Thursday and we will shoot for score on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and ½ day Monday, with shoot-offs and awards to follow. All you can shoot for $80 and that included 3 dinners! Bring ‘em all, we will have a ball.

June 2017 Match Report
LASC Big Bore Match Reports
June 10 – 11, 2017
By Dennis “Moose” Edwards
It's that time of year again, hot and dry. We need to be extremely cautious about fire. We are in prime fire-country and with the Santa Ana winds, it becomes an inferno if ignited. We also need to stay hydrated, so we don't get in trouble. Be cautious for rattlesnakes, they are on the move.
I want to wish all the competitors in this year’s world championships good luck. We have a few California shooters going to Oklahoma this year. Travel safe, have a good time, and win big.
June match was clear and sunny. There were 26 pistols and 18 NRA rifle entries. Plenty of great scores posted, with Al Robertsposting a 40x40 to be BB match winner, which also moves him up from AAA to International class. Way to go Al. Now it's time to play with the big boys. J.R wins SB with a 40 +3 to nose out Eric King who had 40+2. Great shooting guys!!!

July 2017 Match Report
The July match was not very busy. We only had 20 pistol cards and 17 rifle cards turned in. The temperature was extremely hot with very little wind. No open-sight 40s in BB or SB. We did have three 40s: Hulan Mathies, a 40 and 5 shoot-off targets in UAS (BB), and Val Shaver, 40 and 4 shoot-off targets in PH long range, and Jerry Napier, 40+3 shoot-off targets in UAS (SB).
With that said, I have some news. Mike Dewey resigned as the president of LASC. Jerry Napier will move from VP to take his position which leaves the VP open. We will be electing officers during the October match. Please come to this meeting so we can get the officers elected. A quorum is needed to accomplish this, and the last two meetings did not have quorums. I want to thank Mike for all his hard work and dedication. Now you can get some shooting in. (Note: Dennis was not aware, but the VP slot was filled, at least for the moment, by Karen Bailey. Jerry Napier and JR asked her to fill in the VP slot at the .22 match until the October meeting.)
I was told that they are re-vamping www.shootingsteel.com. Soon we can go to that website and check your scores. I talked to Jerry and asked if we could get the Fresno and Avinal scores posted, so maybe this will give us a website we can compare the California Shooters.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT SCORE CARDS: We really do need you to fill your card out completely and legibly. We are working on a scoring system to track shooters and their scores for the club events and for the club website. When you do not complete a card (first and last names, date, firearm make and model, shooting classification, skill level and score), we cannot enter the correct information. Please, so you get the credit you deserve and we can keep accurate score tallies, fully complete legibly each card you return.

LASC Big Bore Match Reports
August 12 and 13, 2017
By Dennis “Moose” Edwards
I want to remind all that it is fire season (this was written prior to the La Tuna Fire!), and we had a small fire by the target repair shop. We need to be very aware of our surroundings and careful with any open flames. Until the weather cools and the rainy season starts, it’s still very dry and now Santa Ana season is starting.
Also, the rattlers are out as the day cools, so be careful when you lie down to shoot. It has been known that those critters will coil up under our box seats or get into target setters’ safe areas/bunkers to get out of the sun. Just be aware where you step.
We had a small turn out this month for the match prior to the Extravaganza. We only had 9 Big Bore guns, 2 Practical Hunter, 1 ½-scale, and 16 Small Bore pistols shot. The NRA rifle side was 17 for a total of 45 guns total. I have to admit it was hot and muggy, and the extravaganza is only a couple weeks away. It has always been slow in August.
REMINDER: Please come to our October match on Saturday and stay for the annual LASC meeting. We need a quorum to get new officers elected. This is really important!!! Support your club!

Extravaganza 2017 Match Report
September 1 – 4, 2017
By Dennis Edwards
It was really hot, muggy, smoky, and sometimes a little wet this year at the extravaganza. I want to thank the YOUNG MARINES for all the hard work they put in setting targets. The conditions were miserable at times, and if it was not for the target setters we could never have had this match. Ramone and Joe, a big thanks to both of you for bringing, taking care of and watching-out for these young marines. It has been a pleasure to see the same young marines grow and mature over the past 5 years.
It is not easy putting on this annual match, so I need to thank a bunch of folks. J R and Jerry Napier for setting up and breaking down the range. Debby for keeping scores. Meg, Pam, Faye, both Karens, and Mrs. Brown for cooking, shopping, cleaning and general housekeeping as well as getting the LASC facilities ready for the event. Bill Wright for the welding expertise on the targets. Jim Henry for his gun-smithing at a moment’s notice. Mike Dewey for the BBQ. And, ALL the shooters who travelled to our event. Without the shooters, we would not even have a sport. A big “LASC THANK YOU” for a very successful match.
We had 139 entries (40 Big Bore, 35 Small Bore, 17-Practical Hunter, 10-Field Pistol, and 37-rifle). There was only one shoot-off between Val Shaver and Dan Hagerty (unlimited open sight), and both shot 40+3. The second go round, Val got six shoot-off targets to Dan’s four. This resulted in Val being match winner in Big Bore. Dan did quite well, winning Revolver, with a very nice 39 and the 3- and 4-gun aggregate (99 and 138, respectfully). J R won Small Bore with a 39. Eric King was our Small Bore 3- and 4‑gun aggregate winner along with getting High Senor and the Ted Zisk award. Dennis Edwards won Practical Hunter with a short range 40+5. Tony Tello was High Rifle with a 34 in pistol cartridge Cowboy Rifle. Landon Christensen was High Junior with a 38 in Small Bore UAS. Joyce Robertson was high woman and match winner with a Field Pistol 24. We flipped a coin to see who was the Iron Man between Val and Eric, with Val winning with his tails call. If you were a class winner and did not stay for the awards, you can pick up you trophy at the stat house next time you shoot.
Congratulations those who won their class and thank you to all those who shot.

October 2017 Match Report
October 2017 Match Report
October 14 and 15, 2017
By Dennis “Moose” Edwards
The Annual Meeting for LASC was held late Saturday afternoon on October 14th, after shooting was over. This year we did not have a quorum. This means there will be no changes to the officers for our upcoming year. Jerry Napier will remain Prez, and Karen Bailey takes over as V.P. Karen was unofficially elected by default when she was asked to step into the position after Jerry moved to President. She also is the editor for our match reports and the Newsletter. All other officers remain the same.
LASC is trying to get the California State Cowboy Rifle Match next year. If this happens it will be during the 3-day Memorial day week-end. I do not shoot rifle, but it sound like fun and I guess I am going to get my cowboy guns warmed up. (Ed note: We got the go ahead after this was written. But, as Moose says, get your cowboy rifles ready!)
We had a small turn out for the October match. There were 10 big bore, 6 small bore, 2 field pistol, 2 practical hunter, and 20 NRA rifles. Plenty of 40s with Val Shaver having (4), J.R. (3), Hulan Matthies (1), and Jerry Napier (1). Great shooting!!!

November 2017 Match Report
November 11 and 12, 2017
By Dennis “Moose” Edwards
November is a very special match in that we celebrate Thanksgiving and Veterans Day at our Saturday night meal. We had a delicious meal, and I want to thank all the chefs and bottle washers. We ate turkey and ham and had all the fixens. It was really a feast!!! If you did not make it to our annual dinner, it was fantastic and it was your loss. We have quite a few vets in our club. WE HONOR ALL VETS, and we cannot thank you enough for your service. It is a pleasure being around these guys, and shooting with them.
It was good to see the out-of-town friends show up to mingle, dine and shoot with us. We had plenty of guns shot. There were 28 NRA entries along with 37 pistol entries. Al Miyamoto shot his first ever 40x40 (way to go, Al!). This was shot in small bore UAS. He told me it took him twenty years to do, I hope this is just the beginning with many more to come. Eric King posted a 39 in ½ size with all five shoot-off targets. This makes him our match winner for big bore. Val Shaver posted two 40s in practical hunter, Jerry Napier a 40 in small bore UAS, Hulan Matthies a 40 in big bore UAS, and Steve Howard got 40 in small bore UAS on a rerun. Great shooting!!!
