January 2019 Match Report
LASC Big Bore Match Report
January 12th and 13th, 2019
By Dennis “Moose” Edwards
It was kind of cold and wet on Saturday and just plain cold on Sunday, which kept the shooters at home. There were only thirty-eight guns shot. There was plenty of action in the small bore arena. Jerry Napier posted a 39 in Unlimited missing a turkey and Val Shaver had a clean card going into rams. Val cleaned the first four rams but dropped number five, so Jerry won Unlimited and the Small Bore Match by reverse animal count. I don't feel bad for Val as he shot a 40+3 beating out J R who dropped his second to last ram in Unlimited Big Bore. So Val won the Big Bore Match. On the NRA rifle side, Boris Sorkin post a very nice 37 in Small Bore Cowboy. He was clean going into the rams but dropped three to post a score of 37.
The total gun count was twenty-four hand guns and fourteen rifles. There were four 40s: Val Shaver (1), J.R. (1) and yours truly (2). Val’s was the only open-sighted 40. J.R.s was Small Bore Unlimited - Any Sight and mine were in Practical Hunter .22 and Long Course.

It was another cold and wet week-end, and this kept most of the shooters at home except for some die-hard shooters. It was nice to see Dave and Patsy Silva from Yuma, Eric King and Dan Hagerty from the San Fran area. Glad you guys came and shot with us. We did miss Jim and Faye Henry. I heard they had a bug. Hope you guys feel better. You were missed!!!
The Saturday night meal was excellent. J.R. Bar-b-cued some prime rib and Ramon and Joe cooked ribs and shrimp. Patsy and Pam helped fix the meal sides and do the clean-up. Thank you ladies! If you want a great meal after a day of shooting, you must stick around for the Saturday night meal. There is plenty of food, adult beverages and bull sh-t for everyone, all for just $10.
There was a total of nineteen pistol and nine rifle scores posted. Jim Harris shot a 40+5 (no spotter) in Big Bore Unlimited to edge out Dan Hagerty 40+4. Val Shaver had a very nice 38 in Revolver missing the first chicken and one turkey. This first chicken miss is the 3rd time Val has done this. When he figures this out, I see some 40s in Revolver for sure. J.R. had a 40+3 in Small Bore, and Jacques Rifkind posted a 36 in Small Bore Scoped Rifle. Very nice shooting!!!!

LASC Big Bore Match Report
March 9th and 10th, 2019
By Dennis “Moose” Edwards
The new club house has a new patio! YEAH! Things are picking up, thanks to Jerry Napier and Joe Cadenas. The two have put together a very nice place for the members to congregate. There is heat/AC, a kitchenette, storage, and a clean dining area for lunch and the Saturday night meal. If you have not shot lately, you probably have not seen the new facilities and the progress made, so come down and shoot with us and enjoy the work that has been done. Jerry told me that LASC, with the help from ASR, plan to start on the restrooms next. If you want to help please contact Jerry Napier. His contact info is on LASC’s web page: www.shootingsteel.com
The weather was cold and cloudy on Saturday. Sunday was a little better but still cool. The pistol shooters are still staying at home. Now that temperatures are warming up, it is the time to dust off them shootin' irons and get to our matches. We had a total of eighteen pistols and twenty rifles post scores. The high Big Bore was Al Roberts beating Val Shaver who missed his last Ram. Smallbore winner was Val Shaver, High Lady was Vicki Shaver, and Boris Sorkin winning NRA rifle. No 40's this match.

May 2019 Match Report
LASC Big Bore Match Report
For May 11th and 12th, 2019
By Dennis “Moose” Edwards
The May match has come and gone, and there was no .22 match this month so I decided to change all my practical hunter sights. I figured that I was seeing and holding each gun a little different when I was shooting. I had three different sight systems on these guns. I standardized them by using the same mounts, rings and scopes. Now all three of these guns are identical. The three guns are Contenders with 12 inch MGM barrels topped with Weaver reverse mounts with Weaver low rings and Simmons 2x6 pistol scopes. I went with the Simmons scope for their eye relief. I found that these scopes have two more inches of eye relief than the Bushnel and Leupold , and the Burris have even less. I also got a .22 caliber Lyman mold so I can shoot cast bullets out of my 22 Hornet. Now, I shoot nothing but cast bullets out of these practical hunter pistols (Short Range is a .22 Hornet, 55g Lyman, Long Range is a 6 TCU with a 95 gr. RCBS mold, and for Small Bore I shoot Standard Plus). I do not know if these changes will help, but at least it should make it more comfortable to shoot.
There are only three more matches before the Extravaganza, and that is the LASC big match for the year. It is going to be a blast. We have a new club house that is air-conditioned and it has a patio. The range looks fabulous and hopefully the restrooms will be completed by September. There are plans drawn up now and things should start rolling soon. If not, porta-potties will be used. LASC will have all their wonderful dinners, and lunches will be served (burgers and dogs) with all the fixen’s. You will never go hungry.
We had a nice turn out for the May match. There was fifty entries posted: eighteen long-range pistols, ten small-bore pistols, and twenty-two NRA rifles. There were six 40s (!): Jim Harris had two, Val Shaver had one, J R had one, Al Roberts had one, and Moose had one. Eric King shot a very nice 39 in Small Bore Revolver and was the three-gun and four-gun (96 and125, respectively) winner in Small Bore. Thanks to all who shot, and supported our sport.

June 2019 Match Report
LASC Big Bore Match Report
For June 8th and 9th, 2019
By Dennis “Moose” Edwards
It looks like the stat house is almost back to normal on the outside, but the inside is a different story. I met with Jerry Napier last week and he had power washed the complete building, and had placed and hung all the new doors. The roof has been installed, but not shingled. There is still tons of work left to be done, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel! When this project is complete it will be the new stat house along with new men’s and women’s bathrooms. There should be lots more room in the restrooms with the redesign. And everything will be new! Also, Jerry is planning on building two outdoor shower stalls. We have the one, but the second will be where the stainless steel sink used to stand because there is a drain and hot water right there.
It was a good turnout for the June match, and it was nice to see the out-of-towners show up. Dan Hagerty and Eric King from the Bay area, and Steve Peck and Dan Bucks from Arizona. There was a total of fifty-two scores posted: seven Big Bore, thirteen Small Bore, six Practical Hunter, two Half Scale, and three Field Pistol. A total of four 40s were posted: J.R. had two, Moose and Val Shaver each had one.

July 2019 Match Report
For July 13th and 14th, 2019
By Dennis “Moose” Edwards
There was a small turn out for our July match. We were missing some of our regular shooters due to regional and international matches. The temps were hot and dry, but with a slight breeze. We had two 40s shot in Unlimited Any Sight (Ted Matthies and Moose) with Ted edging out Moose with three shoot-off targets to Moose's two targets. Al Roberts had a very nice 39 in Unlimited, and Ted Matthies shot 39 in Production, co-winning the Big Bore match with Al because both shooters missed a turkey. No one shot Open Sight Smallbore.
There were plenty of NRA rifle shooters—eighteen—with Boris Sorkin posting a 32 in Open Sight Smallbore and Jerry Napier posting 30 in Smallbore Lever Action. Karen Bailey was high Lady and NRA Lever Action Pistol Cartridge champ with a very nice 25.
I want to thank all the shooters for their participation in our matches. Without you we would lose our range and the right to shoot anywhere in California. California is down to two pistol silhouette ranges (Fresno and LASC). We need you to shoot and shoot often. The Extravaganza is starting on August 30th and runs through September 2nd. This is a four-day event, and let’s make this year the biggest and best one ever! Come down and shoot all the guns you can for $80, and that includes three dinner meals. We have plenty of free camp sites and an AC-cooled club house. Bring you motor homes, trailers, or tents so you can set-up early to take advantage of our electrical hook-ups. Showers and cleaning areas will be available.

August 2019 Match Report
LASC Big Bore Match Report
For August 10th and 11th, 2019
By Dennis “Moose” Edwards
It was one of the best shooting week-ends of the year, in the mid 80's with a slight breeze. I hope the Extravaganza has weather this good!!!! Please come and participate and shoot as many entries as you can in four days, with three nights of dinners, all for $80.00. Jim Henry will be on hand for gun repairs and trigger jobs. There will lunch available for $5.00. Come see some old friends and make some new friends!!! (Obviously Moose did this just before the Extravaganza. This is the first time we had a newsletter since he wrote it and I wanted to include it.)
The stat house is ready for a final coat of paint, and then it will be ready for the office and restrooms. The club house has air conditioning and plenty of room for socializing. We have some electrical hook-ups and water, but no sewer (first come, first served). The range is looking great and ready for you to start posting some 40x40s!!! Plenty of room for camping, so bring your tents.
In August, we had twenty-two pistol and nineteen rifle entries with a total of four 40s posted. Dan Hagerty won Big Bore posting a 40+2 against Jim Harris who had a 40+1. J R had the only 40 in Small Bore and is the Small Bore Match Winner with 40+3. Last but not least, Val Shaver posted 40+4 in Practical Hunter (long range) with his trusty T/C in 6 TCU and was High Senior.
Jacque Rifkind posted a 33 in Small Bore Cowboy Lever Action to win NRA rifle, and Karen Bailey was high female posting 26 in Pistol Cartridge Lever Action rifle. Great shooting folks!!!

Extravaganza 2019 Match Report
August 30th – September 2nd
By Dennis “Moose” Edwards
I want to thank everyone that makes our matches go so smoothly. The most important people are the ladies: Pam, Faye, Joyce, Vicki and Meg, thank you sooo much for your love and support. Without your help we would all starve. Thank you to the LASC leadership for putting the range back together after the fires. Thank you Ramone and Joe for the week-ends you give up so we can have target setters. Thank you target setters for coming out and setting up targets (hot or cold, rain or shine). Thank you Jim Henry without you we all would be throwing stones and our guns would all be broken and rotting away in our gun safes. And thank you shooters for traveling many miles to participate in the sport we love.
The LASC Extravaganza is put on for the shooters. I want to give a little history behind this. In 1995 the LASC leadership wanted to put on a match that would be all inclusive, (shooting, camping, and eating) for one low price of $50. They came up with Labor Day weekend and figured that you can shoot as many guns as you like during these three days. I think Steve Tapp shot 20 or more guns and he set the bar for the Iron Man honor. A few years ago, LASC extended the match by one day and additional time for sighters. The price went to $80 and that included one extra meal. So for $80 plus $20 for lunches and a $20 target setter tip, you can shoot for five full days. This means your vacation would cost $24 a day. Remember that next year when you plan for your next vacation. LASC should be on your list. Also, LASC gave out fourteen $50 gift certificates to the Reloading Center. So, if you were lucky to win one of those, the price would be $70 and if you made your own lunch, the price is back to the original $50.
The 24th annual LASC Extravaganza is over and done with, and was a great success. The total guns posted were 162 with fourteen 40s (67/11 Big Bore, 31/3 Small Bore, and 64 Rifles). The 40s were posted by, Moose (4), Val Shaver (3), J.R.(2), Eric King (1), Jim Harris (1), Jim Parr (1) Dan Buck (1), and Ted Matthies (1). Eric King also won the Three- and Four-Gun Aggregate in Big Bore and Small Bore, the Iron Man trophy, High Senior, and the Ted Zisk award (combination of 1/5th scale and ½ size), along with six 1st-in-Class trophies. Marvin Wahl shot 10 guns and won 10 trophies in his class. Tony Tello won all three Cowboy Lever Action categories and four other NRA rifle categories for a total of seven 1st Place trophies. “One-Gun” Jim Harris came out and shot a 40 in Unlimited and won the class edging out Eric King in the shoot-offs 4 to 3 target. Oh by the way, he shot cast bullets. Vicki Shaver won High Lady in Pistol and Karen Bailey High Lady in Rifle. Great shooting people!!!
If you missed this year’s LASC Extravaganza, the 25th annual match will be held next Labor Day wee- end in 2020. You should start planning now. Hopefully we will see you then. “Great shooting” to all those who came from the LASC family and club.

EXTRAVAGANZA MATCH REPORT – RIFLE MATCH
For October 12th and 13th, 2019
By Dennis “Moose” Edwards
We usually have our LASC Annual meeting after the match ends on Saturday in October, but it was pushed out to November due to the fires. The annual meeting is rescheduled for after the Saturday shoot in November. We will conduct all our yearly business including electing or reelecting the leadership for the club. There needs to be a quorum, so please come and join us. We cannot make any changes without the help of the club members. We will have dinner after the meeting and don't forget Sunday morning waffles by Joe Cadenas.
October was a small match. The freeway off-ramp was closed from east-bound 210 at Osborne, and the Little Tujunga Canyon Road was closed for part of the day on Saturday. On top of that, the traffic was bumper-to-bumper due to the closure of the 14 Freeway on Little Tujunga on Friday.
There was thirty-six guns posted, (sixteen Big Bore, five Small Bore, and fifteen NRA rifles), with three 40s shot. Jim Harris (1), Val Shaver (1), and Jerry Ray (1). The weather was perfect with just a little wind.

November 2019 Match Report
LASC Big Bore Match Report
For November 9th & 10th 2019
by Dennis “Moose” Edwards
We did not have a quorum for our annual LASC club meeting, so there was no new business. There is some good news about the club house and the stat house. First, we got a new 10-ton air conditioner for the club house. That means we will have air and heat which are sufficient for the building. Second, the stat house is completed on the outside and new walls are going up inside. Hopefully this project will be completed early next year so we will have our restrooms back and a working stat house.
Thanksgiving dinner was top of the line. J.R. Barbequed two turkeys and Ramon grilled shrimp. There was plenty of chow and B.S. to go around. If you missed it you should come out and join us for the Saturday night meals. The ladies of LASC put on a fantastic spread and deserve a big “THANK YOU” for all their hard work to make sure the members and target setters had a great holiday dinner. LASC also provides lunches on Saturday and Sunday for $5 and Joe will cook you a waffle breakfast on Sundays before 9 a.m. What could be better: Lots of good food, great conversation and you can shoot too!!!!
There was a total of forty-three entries posted (twenty-one pistols and twenty-two rifles) with only two 40's shot: J.R. and Val Shaver. It was nice to see two lady shooters: Vicky Shaver shot two entries in Field pistol (15 and16) and Brigette Hahn shot an entry in Hunter pistol (10) and Unlimited Any Sight standing (18), with Brigette taking High Lady with 18 in UAS. Very nice shooting ladies.
